Iggy's Photo Album

Conures are very special animals. If you have ever owned a bird, then you know how much work they are. Birds, ALL kinds, need a lot of attention, care, patience & love. While parakeets may only live about 5 years, conures/parrots/macaws can live up to 35 years, so putting the time in early to make sure you & your birdie are the best of friends is VERY IMPORTANT!

Conures are pretty loud animals, so if you live in an apartment, you may want to reconsider your choice of pets. They screech VERY loudly & make all kinds of noises. Also, realize that they need a lot of time with you, so if you cannot commit time, then do not get one. Conures are very smart animals & leaving them alone too much may make them think you are ignoring them, or punishing them. They require that special bond between the two of you.

There are a number of things you need to do to, to get 100% ready for your new friend. You want them to have the best? Then study up first!

1.) Get a HUGE cage for them...they depend on it for sleep & comfort, so make it a good one! It doesn't really have to have its own legs..I got mine for , no legs. We have it on an old coffee table in the corner of the living room. Make sure it's sturdy too! Corn cobs pieces go on the bottom to grab up the poo, making it easier to clean. I find that Iggy needs his cage cleaned about once every 4 days, or it gets TOO messy!

2.) Food: They will need a staple food, something that smells like fruit. Those hard little crunchies are great! Also, you need to get snacks for them, to munch on & to reward them for being good! Fresh fruit is by far the best! Iggy's favorite "yummys" are grapes (seedless) & apples (peeled pieces). Never give them anything citrus, like oranges or alvocados. Your pet store expert will tell you this too! There are nice little boxes of chewy friut snacks avaibable, as well as great mixes, containing pumpkin & sunflower seeds, chewy fruits, corn kernels & other things.

3.) Toys--They need 'em! Conures are intelligent animals, so they will get bored & start biting (beleive me!). So go get them a bunch of toys to keep busy with. Don't put a mirror in the cage (they will not want to play with you, but with the birdie in there). Definitely get some chew toys, like the kind with wooden blocks, a ladder, a swing, a few heavy made bells. They will rip through them, just because that's what they do, so don't worry.

4.) Comfort: They must be in a comfy atmosphere. Conures can sense tension in the air, so don't be scared when you take them out, or they will bite! Easy talking to them will soothe their fears about their new home. Take a few minutes at a time & just talk to them. Letting Iggy nibble on me a few times really helped, because now he knows my scent, my taste..When he bites me, I say "No Bite" (which he will eventually say back anyway!), but NEVER hit a bird! NEVER spray water at it either! They depend on water for bathing & fun, so abusing it this way can make them afraid!
